Tom Weldon, CEO of Penguin Random House Visits JWS

Aaliyah Collins Year 12

On 15 March, Mason Hughes and I were fortunate enough to interview Tom Weldon, CEO of Penguin Random House as well as meet Siena Parker, Head of Creative Responsibility. Sixth Formers as well as a mixture of Year 11s and 9s were able to listen to the talk which was in a question and answer format. Tom and Siena were kind enough to answer further questions after the talk about working in business, the publishing industry, interview skills and Penguin Random House. The experience was immensely interesting and I got some really great advice from both of them. Hopefully I'll see them again as either a future employee or as an author!

Mason Hughes Year 12

We found out that his favourite book genre are thriller books and his favourite book is Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris. We also found out about the opportunities that Penguin Random House have for young people who are looking for work experience or a paid internship over the summer. With over 2000 employees there are a lot of job opportunities, mainly based in London looking over the Thames! Tom was keen to know our thoughts on a new Frank Lampard book that they are considering and also what social media we use most to help them communicate with a younger audience.

We were thrilled to have Tom come and speak from such an established and well know organisation. The students thoroughly enjoyed the event and have been inspired to research the publishing sector and the books that he discussed. Talks like these can really enthuse our students to consider their future careers.
