Literacy - Key Stage 3

The Learning Support Department offer Literacy support to small groups of students identified in Years 7 and 8. They follow a novel based course which gives opportunity for students to develop reading, writing and speaking and listening skills. Students are identified for such groups by the Department and parents are informed of the change to their curriculum.

Study Support - Key Stage 4

The Learning Support Department offers a number of different courses as Study Support for small numbers of students who require this level of intervention at KS4.

In Year 9 the ASDAN short course of ‘Stepping Stones’ is followed which is a course that will enhance basic skills and develop ‘Life Skills’.

In Year 10 the ASDAN course ‘Key Steps’ is offered as a course to enhance ‘Wider Key Skills’ and students have the opportunity to work in small groups to further develop ‘Life Skills’.

In Year 10 the ASDAN ‘Function Junction’ courses in English and Maths is also followed by some students who need the opportunity to further develop their basic skills in these areas.

All of the above courses can be used in conjunction with the Year 10 and 11 option of ASDAN COPE Level 2.

Youth Award - Key Stage 4

The ASDAN Certificate of Personal Effectiveness is offered at Level 2 in Years 9, 10 and 11.

The ASDAN ‘Function Junction’ is delivered in Year 9 to develop basic skills in both English and Maths.

In Years 10 and 11 the COPE Level 2 course is followed where students create a portfolio of evidence to support a number of challenges they have undertaken. As part of the course they also have to show that they can effectively meet the requirements of the ‘Wider Key Skills’ of ‘Improving their own Learning’,’ Working with Others’ and’ Problem Solving’.

Vocational - Key Stage 4

In Year 9 the students advised to opt for the Level 2 BTEC Work Skills course will complete a novel based Literacy course to further develop their core skills in reading writing, speaking and listening. Students will have opportunities to participate in discussions and to make presentations.

In Years 10 and 11 students will complete the Units for the Level 2 Certificate in Work Skills or the Level 2 Extended Certificate in Work Skills, depending on the individual student’s capability.

During the course the students will study the ABC of employability – ‘Attitude’, ‘Behaviour’ and ‘Communication’. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the process of searching for, applying for and interviewing for a job and the Year 10 Work Experience Placement forms a large part of the course. This course equips students with the skills to enter the world of work.
